How to Build an Outdoor Gas Firepit
Basic Fire Pit installation components are shown in the illustration. The quantity of 6" pipe nipples will vary with the size of the ring as well as the couplings required to screw the pipe nipples together. The center plug of the fire ring is reversible from the top to the bottom, depending on whether you want the holes of the fire ring facing up or down. We recommend up for the best flame effect. In the illustration, the opening for the gas connection is facing down. Simply remove the plug and re-install it on the bottom of the ring. You MUST use teflon tape or a pipe sealing compound on all threaded connections. All installations must conform to local codes.
Once you have decided on the size of the ring you will use, you will then need to determine the number of pipe nipples and couplings you will need. For example, a 36" fire ring would likely need three 6" nipples and two couplings, which would give you approximately 20" of horizontal length from the center of the fire ring to the outside of your fire pit. If you have a thicker fire pit wall, just add another 6" nipple. Then, you would add one more 6" nipple to go vertical to the bottom of the fire ring and an ell to make the 90 degree turn. All that you would need to add is the valve, which includes the flange and key for operation. You have all of the components to plumb the fire ring to the outside for your gas connection.
It is not only easy, but, affordable. The total purchase, with pipe, fittings and valve (as seen in the illustration) 3- 6" nipples, 1 coupling, 1 ell and 1 valve is just $35.28. The fire ring, of course, is additional. |
